Per diem is a daily allowance for lodging and meals & incidental expenses (M&IE) provided to government, military, and many corporate travelers. The General Services Administration (GSA) sets rates for each location in the US, updated annually.
M&IE (meals & incidental expenses) is a flat daily allowance — you receive it whether or not you spend it, so anything you don't spend is yours to keep, tax-free and receipt-free. Lodging is different: it's reimbursed at your actual cost up to the cap, so the savings live in M&IE. This calculator shows your exact M&IE allowance so you know what you can keep.
On your first and last travel days, M&IE is calculated at 75% of the full daily rate. This is the standard GSA rule and is automatically applied in our calculator.
